Dischromatics Celebrates 20 years!

Despite the current economic downturn, and the constant negative articles in the media, one Welsh company has cause to celebrate and look positively to the future. Dischromatics Ltd, based in Abercarn, recently feted its 20th anniversary with cakes and champagne, and a memento for each member of staff.

The company was founded in 1989 by Stewart Spencer and is now run by his son Gareth. It was formed during the heyday of the 5.25” floppy disk. Using his experience in the data storage field, allied with that of his former business partner, Stewart helped pioneer a technology which was a world-first at the time and allowed the 5.25” floppy disks to be picture printed to individual customer’s designs. Since then, the company has enjoyed successful forays into computer hardware, networking and website design whilst maintaining a high standing in the world of media duplication, supplying 3.5” floppy disks to this day, as well as CDs, DVDs and now USB keys, and keeping pace with new technologies like Blu-ray, and the re-emergence of the traditional vinyl record.

Investing appropriately, Dischromatics has continued to expand the operation which has enabled the company to remain ahead of the competition - purchasing state-of-the-art CD and DVD duplication and printing equipment, gaining ISO9001 and ISO14001 accreditation, and establishing a close link with Europe’s premier media disc replicator, Sony DADC. This strategy has already enabled the company to weather one recession in the 1990’s whilst many competitors fell by the wayside, and there certainly are no plans to stand still during the current downturn. As Gareth explains, “investing in the future as we have done recently by purchasing a high-spec Digital Print press from Konica Minolta and introducing a print finishing department on-site at a time when many of our competitors are looking inwardly at their own costs, means that we are not only well-placed to withstand this recession, but to grow the company into the future. I see no reason why we should not be celebrating 40 years of business in 20 years time!”

Indeed, plans are afoot for even more investment at Dischromatics, including the re-launch of the company website, plus the addition of an on-site post-production, authoring and graphic design suite. This forward-thinking, positive approach certainly is refreshing in the current climate and it is little wonder the company enjoys repeat-business and receives much praise from clients large and small alike, and boasts glowing testimonials from such companies as Panasonic, Lloyds TSB, Scottish Widows and Grant Thornton.

Dischromatics’ business model is one the company can be rightly proud of and the company is a great example of what can be achieved by any small company with a positive attitude and shrewdness in business, coupled with a little financial and business support from local Chambers of Commerce and Business Forums.
