Increase in Orders for Dischromatics' Print Department

Since the introduction of the Konica Minolta BizHub Pro digital press and off-line finishing equipment just a few months ago, Dischromatics has produced a wide range of printed material for various customers, and has seen order volumes increase dramatically thanks largely to word-of-mouth recommendations, further enhancing the company's reputation.

In addition to the packaging inserts used in products traditionally supplied by the firm to compliment its CD's and DVD's such as booklets for Jewel cases or inlay sheets for DVD boxes, a number of Card Wallets have been produced for clients with varying designs, and are proving to be one of the most popular print products. Dischromatics supplies these either with flaps to form a "Lancing Pack" or without them, and offers customers a price reduction when purchasing the wallets as part of disc production orders, as well as supplying them in bulk. A number of Point of Sale items have also been recently produced, such as an order of ‘Tent Cards’ for a South Wales Brewery. NCR (no carbon required) products have equally proven extremely popular with a number of local companies requiring duplicate or triplicate order and receipt books and pads for their glazing, motoring and decorating companies!

This month, Dischromatics is proud to announce further additions to our in-house production facilities, with the purchase of a Konica Minolta BizHub Pro C5501 Digital Production Print Press plus on and off-line finishing equipment, and also an automated inkjet disc printer, for use with our Watershield coated discs.

This brand new, state-of-the-art equipment has been purchased with the help of a grant from the ‘SMART Technology Exploitation Programme’ and the Welsh Assembly Government, which is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The machinery will ensure Dischromatics has full control over all stages of short-run and fast production requirements from the disc copying and printing right through to the digitally printed paper parts, and means we will be able to turn around rush jobs even quicker, and cheaper, than ever before. The range of products directly on offer will also be enhanced with the addition of printed material such as posters, Christmas cards, sports programmes, letterheads, business cards and more!! Alongside the Digital Press will be all the necessary off-line finishing equipment including a guillotine, an automatic folding machine with the ability to perforatate, and a booklet maker to ensure a complete professionally produced product in the fastest possible time, turning the company into a true "One-Stop Shop".

The automated disc printer, also due for installation in the next couple of weeks, ensures the company is in a position to print large numbers of Watershield discs in tight timeframes, with 24/7 production now achievable. The new printer also uses 4 dedicated individual CMYK cartridges, meaning that black tones can now be printed directly, without the need to mix colours to achieve the desired effect.

Dischromatics at 'Nollywood Evolution'

Dischromatics was recently invited to address the "Nollywood Evolution" conference held at Passion TV in South London, and hosted by the UK Chapter of the Association of Movie Producers Nigeria (AMP UK). The event, entitled "The Way Forward, Doing It the Right Way", was held to push forward the development of the world’s third largest film industry, recently dubbed ‘Nollywood’, and was attended by many influential figures from the Nigerian film industry including Mr Olu Ajanoku of the Nigerian Film & Video Classification Board, and Dr. Diran of the Nigerian High Commission.

Invited to the conference by Mr. Chucks Mordi (pictured above), Chairman of AMP UK and CEO of Livingstone Pictures (for whom Dischromatics produced the DVD release "Bleeding Rose" in 2007), the Abercarn-based company was represented by its Chairman, Stewart Spencer; its Sales Director, Gareth Spencer and its Sales Manager Alex Spencer. Stewart introduced Dischromatics to the audience, giving a little of the firms history and explaining the business ethos before passing the microphone to Gareth who addressed the cost and quality benefits of DVD over VCD, a pertinent question in the Nigerian market where nearly all titles are currently released on VCD-only, and anti-piracy solutions available including ARccOS copy-protection, Watermarking, Pit-Logos and various distinctive packaging options.

Dischromatics presence at the event was very well received and a further meeting with key AMP members including Mr. Mordi, Mr. Ajanoku and Dr. Diran is due to be arranged over the next couple of weeks at Dischromatics head office, where future working relationships between the Welsh company and the Nollywood film industry will be on the agenda. The burgeoning film market in Nigeria holds a great deal of promise, and with their high rate of film output and a commitment to quality and consistency in all aspects of production, Dischromatics is in an ideal position to fulfil the Nollywood film industry's requirements as its influence on the world stage increases.

Recently, Dischromatics has been receiving a number of queries regarding increased turnaround times on replication jobs. These potential clients are then going on to explain that they have been told by another company that disc production companies industry-wide are suffering from delayed delivery times on jobs.

Firstly, we would like to make it perfectly clear that we are offering the same replication service as we always have, with the standard 10-12 working day turnaround still in place. The reason for this confusion is the recent closure of one of the industries cheaper replicators, Optical Disc Services, which was used by many brokers across the UK, though never by Dischromatics. This has in turn forced some brokers into difficulties as they scratch around trying to source a new manufacturer for each job they carry out, resulting in them suffering significant delays at several stages. The industry has also seen the recent closure of some smaller replication firms who were hit with bills for unpaid DVD royalties and could not afford to pay up.

Happily for our clients, Dischromatics has always believed in the quality of products and service on offer though our contract with Sony DADC, and continued this liaison through recent years, despite the presence of cheaper, lower quality replication firms within the industry and this is now therefore bearing fruit, as we have not been affected by the closure of ODS, and we are still perfectly placed to respond to customer needs at this difficult time.

More duplication options with Dischromatics

Dischromatics continues to optimise its services this month, with the addition of yet more options on duplication runs.

The first of these updates is the addition of two re-transfer TEAC P55 printers, allowing the company to offer full colour photo-quality thermal printing for the first time since its inception. The printers work by laying ink down onto a film using a heat strobe, which is in turn laid onto the disc surface and transferred using thermal energy. The inclusion of these printers into Dischromatics’ roster means customers now have a choice of print type on full colour, low quantity jobs.

Coupled with this, offset and screen printing of discs have also recently been made available on orders of 50 units and above; a big difference from the usual 300 unit minimum run. These print procedures are considered by many to provide the end user with the best quality print, although each has its own merits. If you require the highest quality printing of a full colour design, offset printing is second to none due to it’s capability to print at a high resolution; screen printing however, is the best option for designs requiring large areas of the same colour or Pantone colour to be laid down, as it provides a smooth and consistent finish.

January also saw Dischromatics complete production on the latest LP by the Newport-based act, Goldie Lookin' Chain. The CD, entitled ‘Under The Counter’, is their first independent release since parting company with their record company in March 2006, and will be available in select stores within the UK.

Special Packaging for Duplication

Following on from last months updates, Dischromatics has added yet more products to its in-house duplication range.

We are now able to supply both clear and coloured C-Shell cases on all orders. All the usual colours are available as well as some that are more extraordinary! We offer transparent cherry red, red, yellow, green, violet, blue & green, as well as solid red, black, white & orange, but check with the sales team prior to order placement for current availabilty on the colour you desire. Alternatively, Ejector cases can be included with all jobs, with a choice of colours for the ‘Trigger’ and mechanism available:- clear, blue, black, red, violet & orange, as well as with binder clips for presentation purposes.

However, if your run calls for something a bit special, we also offer a couple of other options to really help your product stand out from the crowd. The Woodcraft pack is a CD-sized disc packaging solution made from high quality wood; it is held in place by a metal clip and the tray is cut to fit a disc. This product oozes class, and would be ideal for use with an environmentally friendly product. On the other hand, the CD-Tin Smartbox is produced using metal, and designed to house one disc sitting in its cradle. The product is rounded to perfectly fit the shape of a disc, and, like the Woodcraft packs, can be printed onto using customer artwork.

On the duplicated media side we can now supply thermally printed discs made from coloured polycarbonate on orders of 50 discs and upwards. Colours available include green, purple and orange and can be supplied in just a few days, copied and packed to your specification.

Also made recently available for inclusion in your job are disc-fastening gel studs, coloured PP mail cases & multi disc DVD cases (up to 10 trays). ISO & New Products....

Following our annual surveillance visit this September, we are proud to announce the continuation of Dischromatics Ltd ISO accreditations.

The day-long inspection covered all aspects of the ISO 9001 & 14001 requirements, with the entire premises under scrutiny. This is the third year in a row the company has received re-accreditation; occurring every year from the start of the project in 3 year cycles with a complete review due in 2008 following two surveillance visits since the original accreditation. The resulting report also made for pleasant reading, having not picked up any minor or major non-conformanices relating to either standard.

This month also brings a change in the packaging range on offer, with the recent inclusion of two new products. Alongside the usual options, we now offer ‘Discbox Sliders’ and ‘Reepaks’, both made using high quality card. The Reepaks are 100% recyclable, smaller than most plastic packaging, yet more stable and durable than standard carton or paper sleeves. The Discbox Slider (or ‘DBS’) is operated by sliding the tray out of the card body, and has a flap at the end of the sliding component to prevent possible spillages of the disc. The Reepaks are formulated in a similar way to Digpaks, but rather than using a plastic tray, the Reepaks special CD holding is made of cardboard, which ensures the disc is securely kept in place and yet easily taken out.

Dischromatics goes Continental

In keeping with recent tradition, this month sees Dischromatics take on a French student for a summer placement. Marion Dubost, from Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne region of the country, will be with the company for around two months, in which time she intends to fully update our French website, and begin to outsource new French-based customers.

Dischromatics has also increased its continental connections with the completion of a number of jobs for clients on the European mainland. In the past few months, the company has produced a run of 1,000 vinyl-effect CD’s for the Spanish record label ‘Rumble Records’, two music CDs in digipaks, both for French customers, and is currently in the process of setting up another job for the Portuguese firm ‘Vila Castelo’. This recent business further increases the number of EU countries Dischromatics has now dealt with; including companies in Germany, Malta & Belgium! Card Payments with Dischromatics Ltd

Dischromatics now has the facility to accept payment cards, giving the customer increased flexibility in many areas.

The change cuts out the need for the customer to go through lengthy bank transactions, whether on the internet or over the counter. It also means that rather than waiting for a cheque to arrive in our office, clients can simply provide us with the necessary details, and let Dischromatics do all the leg work.

We will ensure that the customer’s full details are taken, including verification of security codes, billing addresses etc. to avoid any possibility of fraudulent transactions. These measures will be carried out alongside our ISO procedures to ensure that your particulars are in the safest hands.

Both debit and credit cards can be used, and whilst there is no fee for using a debit card, a surcharge of 2.55% of the total is applied to credit card transactions. Dischromatics Re-Launch Packaging Pages

Dischromatics has recently undertaken the most radical overhaul of its website since the new site was launched 2 years ago.

As the range of packaging on offer through Dischromatics continues to expand, the Management team has become aware that some customers have been finding it increasingly difficult to find the type of packaging option they require on the site. This was also highlighted during one of the regular ISO Management meetings where customer feedback on the issue was assessed and solutions discussed. As such it was decided that the Dischromatics website needed to move away from using a central packaging page containing a list of all available options in one place and instead create a series of new pages with a menu page to link them together.

Products were firstly split into categories such as “Standard Packaging” or “Special Packaging” and a brand new page was created for each section, linked from the central menu page and via hotlinks between each other. New products were added where relevant and new photographs taken and manipulated to give a clean and clear effect to the pages. The idea of describing the product and having a link showing a pop-up image of the product was kept as this has proved popular amongst customers.

A new page of “Multi-Packaging” has also been created especially for those clients who produce sets of discs that need to be packed in one box. Dischromatics will also be launching a brand new “Bulk Packaging” page in the near future to supply clients who require only packaging products without discs, although discounts will be offered to those clients who also purchase media from the company at the same time.

Dischromatics have recently launched a brand new website aimed at customers who require print services, hand packing and assembly, graphic design and fulfilment.

Although the company already carries out regular fulfilment runs for high street chains, the service now goes beyond just sending out compact discs. Dischromatics will complete individual mailing for any number of different products. The offices are situated just around the corner from the local sorting office, allowing the company to work with increased efficiency, and ensuring the post never gets missed. Even if you do not require your goods to be shipped to various addresses, the assembly team can complete any hand-packing run, whether large or small, one-off or regular, in a clean environment.

Dischromatics can now also supply all sorts of printed matter including full colour printed posters, leaflets, programmes, CD and DVD inserts and many other products upon request. The artwork for your printed parts can also be completed in-house by the design team, supplying you with pdf proofs at every stage of the design. DVD Business Cards Now Available

New to the Dischromatics range this autumn are replicated DVD Business Cards. Previously only CD Business Cards have been supplied by Dischromatics and these traditional solutions are still available in replicated 32MB size or duplicated and labelled 30MB size.

The DVD Business Cards are only available in replicated format from a minimum of 1000 units. A DVD Business Card duplication service is not currently available but may be added at a later date if demand is strong enough. Presently however, the company is pleased to offer the replicated DVD cards in both DVD-5 (250MB) and DVD-9 (400MB) sizes.

Prices for all cards is inclusive of full colour on-body litho printing and individual packaging in PP wallets as well as delivery to any address in the UK (one address per order). New Customer......New Staff.

Along with the sunshine, August has brought Dischromatics some new arrivals.

The company gained a new customer this month, in the form of leading financial and business advisor, Grant Thornton. It was a fulfilment job with a difference; every disc had a different bit of information printed on the facia, and totally different data contained on the disc. This was the case for over 1400 units, with 150 'specimens' sent with generic information; each disc was then packed into an A4 jiffy bag along with a customer supplied booklet.

A number of envelopes were checked by Grant Thornton employees, who stayed on site throughout the vital stages of the job, before those bags were signed off and sealed. The discs were being sent all over the world, from London to Lebanon; and this, along with the extremely small margin for error, meant every step of the manufacturing procedure had to be planned to a tee. This was aided by splitting the job down into 'bite-size' parts, and carrying out stringent quality checks on every disc before dividing the envelopes into their corresponding world zone.

As Dischromatics continues to expand, the company welcomes their new employee, Rhys Thomas. Currently, Rhys is working alongside the production team, giving him an appreciation of the work done by Dischromatics and the procedures that are followed, but will be moving into the office environment in the near future.

Readers of the Western Mail may have noticed Dischromatics Ltd featured in the 5th July issue. The article focused on the companies Blu-ray capabilities, as well as going into some of the background information on Dischro.

Once Blu-ray is released, Dischromatics will be the firm in Wales able to offer the medium; one of the few in the UK. The discs can store 25GB of data on one layer, allowing increased resolution and interactivity, carrying the entertainment industry to the next generation. With the upcoming release of the Playstation 3, combined with backing from all but one of the major Hollywood studios, Blu-ray looks set to dominate the marketplace over its rival, HD-DVD, although only time will tell.....

Joking Apart with Dischromatics

This month Dischromatics has completed production of the popular 90's comedy series 'Joking Apart'.

The pilot for the series was first aired in 1991, under the name 'Comic Asides', and the first series was commissioned soon after. The show is the story of the breakup of comedy writer Mark Taylor and his wife Becky, and is packed with one-liners, cringe worthy scenes, and genuinely moving moments.

The decision to manufacture the DVD's was made after our customer, Craig Robins, was bombarded with questions on the website he runs dedicated to the series, things like..."Joking Apart has to be one of the finest shows I’ve ever seen", "Where is Joking Apart on DVD? I remember this being classic stuff...."

Craig then decided to buy the rights to replicate the series from the BBC; the first individual to do so, and chose Dischromatics as his supplier- he hasn't looked back since!! Fire & Water

This week Dischromatics undertook their annual fire safety training, and injected their own brand of authenticity to the role.

As you can tell from the photo, the company places a strong emphasis on the dangers fire poses in the workplace; they are now participating in the RMAPS project in conjunction with South Wales Fire & Rescue Service. The Service holds the floor plans for Dischromatics' premises, ensuring that in the event of an emergency the fire crew will waste no time in fighting the blaze.

All fire alarms were tested during the course of the day, and a final drill was carried out adhering to the regulations laid down by the Health and Safety Executive.

Dischromatics have recently added 2 colour printers to their duplication facilities. They are to be used in conjunction with the new Watershield discs, allowing discs to be inkjet printed without smudging or scratching. The printable surface extends to the centre hub, allowing a larger print area than matt or gloss labels. Watershield DVD-R's are not currently available, but watch this space for updates!!

The Expansion of Dischromatics Ltd

Summer is here, and as we enter a new season, Dischromatics continues to expand its range of products.

We are now offering some of the products available through our replication and duplication services for wholesale. Vinyl Effect, and colored Vinyl Effect CDR's can be purchased direct, or from any supporting store at a reasonable price. These discs give the impression of an old 45 record complete with light distorting grooves. As well as being available in classic black color, these discs also come in many eye-catching and shiny colors such as red, pink, blue, green, gold, yellow and purple.

As well as increasing the availability of our products, we are also increasing the capacity of our plant by investing in new duplication and printing machinery. Previously, we have offered an in-house service for black on-body printing; we now have the capacity to print in full color directly onto the discs, thus increasing the level of quality for the customer. We will be using specially manufactured discs which stop scratching, and smudging of the ink when exposed to fluid.

Blu-ray Disc Information from Dischromatics

From August 2006, Dischromatics will be one of the only companies in Europe capable of supplying the new Blu-ray discs, thanks to the company’s close association with Sony DADC in Austria who form part of the Blu-ray Disc Association, founders of Blu-ray technology.

Dischromatics staff have also recently returned from a visit to Sony DADC headquarters in Austria they received a full Blu-ray presentation encompassing HD-TV images, the latest in surround sound as well as some of the interactive bonus features that will be available to Blu-ray users. The visit enabled the Dischromatics team to gain useful information in order to better inform customers and to discuss a wide range of issues from graphic design to prices.

Blu-ray technology has been developed to allow more data to be supplied on a disc the same size and dimensions as a normal CD or DVD. This is possible by compressing the space between data tracks and using a blue laser to read the data instead of the red laser on CD/DVD drives as the wavelength of the blue ray is shorter and therefore has less spread across tracks. Each layer of data on a Blu-ray Disc (or BD) can house up to 25GB (compared to 4.7GB on a DVD) whereas a HD-DVD (Blu-ray’s main competitor and also based on blue laser technology) only contains a maximum of 15GB per layer. This increased capacity and the internet connectivity of BD players means that publishers will have access to a world of new possibilities from HD-TV to downloadable bonus content. Additionally the button has a drop-down menu facility showing headlines of current posts on the Dischromatics Blog via our RSS feed. Out of all the options currently available for the packaging of CD's and DVD's, digipaks are perhaps the most attractive. Often used to promote 'special editions' of films, or just to give a product that 'wow' factor, the wide range of possibilities make them extremely versatile.

Digipaks can come in many different sizes relating to the product that they carry; for CD's and DVD's the standard digipak can be used, for 8cm discs there are 8cm digipaks. Pockets for booklets up to 32 pages are also available alongside many other possibilities such as booksize digipaks, which, as the name suggests, can include whole books. There can be a digipak produced for virtually any requirement.
